How to Set Up Scheduled Tasks in Claude Cowork

I wanted to automate repetitive tasks like daily standups and weekly reports without manually triggering them each time. I found that Claude Cowork’s scheduled tasks feature can handle this for me.

What You Need Before Starting

Before you set up scheduled tasks, make sure you have:

  • A paid Claude Cowork plan (free plans don’t support scheduled tasks)
  • macOS or Windows (feature is in research preview)
  • Access to the Claude Cowork app

How to Create a Scheduled Task

  1. Open Claude Cowork and navigate to the Customize tab
  2. Select “Schedule Tasks” from the options
  3. Click “Create New Schedule”
  4. Choose your frequency:
    • Daily (runs every day at a specific time)
    • Weekly (runs on specific days)
    • Monthly (runs on specific dates)
  5. Set the time you want the task to run
  6. Describe what you want the task to do in natural language
  7. Select any plugins or data sources the task needs access to
  8. Save your schedule

Practical Examples

Here’s how I use scheduled tasks in different scenarios:

Daily Morning Brief

  • Frequency: Daily at 9:00 AM
  • Plugins: Jira, GitHub
  • Task: “Summarize new tickets, PRs, and commits from the last 24 hours”

Weekly Team Updates

  • Frequency: Every Friday at 4:00 PM
  • Plugins: GitHub, Slack, Figma
  • Task: “Create a summary of this week’s commits, design updates, and team announcements”

Monthly HR Reports

  • Frequency: 1st of each month at 10:00 AM
  • Plugins: Spreadsheet
  • Task: “Generate a headcount report with new hires, departures, and role changes”

Why the Customize Tab Matters

I found the new Customize tab helpful because it brings plugins, skills, and connectors together in one place. Instead of switching between different menus, I can manage all my automation settings from a single location. This makes it easier to see which plugins are available and how they connect to my scheduled tasks.

Common Issues to Avoid

Research Preview Limitations The scheduled tasks feature is still in research preview. I noticed some features might change or be unavailable at times. Check the documentation for the most current information.

Plugin Integration Not all plugins work with scheduled tasks yet. I test my scheduled tasks manually first to make sure the plugins I need are supported.

Time Zone Settings Make sure your time zone is correct in Claude Cowork settings. I once set a task for 9 AM but it ran at 6 AM because my time zone wasn’t configured properly.

Frequency Choice Daily tasks can overwhelm you with notifications. I start with weekly schedules and adjust based on what I actually need.

Next Steps

After creating your first scheduled task:

  1. Check the task history to verify it ran correctly
  2. Adjust the frequency if you’re getting too many or too few updates
  3. Refine your task descriptions based on the output quality
  4. Add more data sources as your team adopts more tools

Scheduled tasks work best when you have clear, repeatable workflows. I keep my task descriptions specific and focused on a single outcome to get the most useful results.

Summary

In this post, I showed you how to set up scheduled tasks in Claude Cowork using the Customize tab, configure frequency options, and integrate with common plugins like Jira and GitHub. The key is starting with a simple daily or weekly schedule and expanding from there based on what your team actually needs.
