ChatGPT Pro vs Claude Max vs Gemini: Which AI Subscription Is Worth Your Money in 2026
Purpose
I subscribed to all major AI services: ChatGPT Pro ($200/month), Claude Max 20x ($200/month), Gemini Pro ($20/month), Grok SuperGrok ($30/month), and Kimi Allegretto (199 RMB/month). After months of real usage, here’s what I found.
What I Tested
I used each service for:
- Code generation and debugging
- Technical writing
- Translation work
- Research and fact-checking
- Image and video generation
ChatGPT Pro ($200/month)
GPT-5.3 and GPT-5.4 are solid for most tasks.
Strengths:
- Image and video generation built-in (no separate tool needed)
- Fewer detail errors than Claude
- Reliable and careful in execution
- Good for translation work
Weaknesses:
- Concept analysis can miss nuances
- Text generation less concise than Claude
- Sometimes over-explains simple points
Best for: General productivity, multimodal work, translation
Claude Max 20x ($200/month)
Opus 4.6 dominates in coding and creative writing.
Strengths:
- Unbeatable for code generation
- Superior emotional understanding in writing
- Handles complex tasks in one attempt
- Great for concept exploration and ideation
Weaknesses:
- No image generation
- Translation prone to Chinglish errors
- Account ban risk (content restrictions)
- Fast token consumption (expensive)
Best for: Coding, creative writing, nuanced discussions
Important: Skip Claude Sonnet 4.6
I tested Sonnet 4.6 for complex text processing. Same task that GPT-5.4 handles in one attempt requires multiple iterations with Sonnet. Not worth it. Either pay for Opus or use a different service.
Gemini Pro ($20/month)
Gemini 3.1-pro beats GPT in math computation speed.
Strengths:
- Excellent math capabilities
- NotebookLM is a standout research tool
- Banana and Veo (video/image) work well
- Great value at $20/month
Weaknesses:
- Frequent service disruptions
- Quota cuts without notice
- Chat history sometimes deleted
- Rigid AI alignment
Critical tip: Don’t use the Gemini web interface. Access via API or AI Studio for stability.
Best for: Math-heavy work, research (via API), budget-conscious users
Grok SuperGrok ($30/month)
Grok 4.2 has a specific use case.
Strengths:
- Best for fact-checking X (Twitter) content
- Quick access to real-time X data
Weaknesses:
- Known for NSFW content generation (less relevant for professional use)
- Grok Heavy tier at $300/month has questionable value
Best for: X/Twitter fact-checking
Budget Options
If you don’t need premium features:
- Free: Doubao 2.0-pro offers surprisingly good performance at zero cost
- Mid-tier: Kimi Allegretto at 199 RMB/month (about $27) for Chinese users

For best translation results, I combine services:
Step 1: GPT-5.4 generates initial translationStep 2: Opus 4.6 refines and polishesTip: Add "Do not overuse dashes" to prevent AI writing patternsCommon Mistakes to Avoid
- Subscribing to Claude Max for translation - GPT-5.4 produces cleaner English
- Using Gemini web interface - API/Studio is more stable
- Choosing Claude Sonnet over Opus - Sonnet requires multiple iterations
- Ignoring free options - Doubao is good enough for many daily tasks
Summary
In this post, I compared five AI subscriptions based on real usage. The key point is: match your subscription to your primary use case, not the “best” AI overall. For $200/month, ChatGPT Pro gives the best general value, while Claude Max excels for developers. Gemini Pro at $20 is great for math if you tolerate service issues.
