How to Get Access to GPT-5.5 in ChatGPT, Codex, and API
I updated my Codex app the day GPT-5.5 was announced, checked the model selector, and… nothing. No GPT-5.5 option. Just the same GPT-5.4 I’d been using.
A Reddit thread confirmed I wasn’t alone. One user with 42 upvotes asked: “Anyone else who still doesn’t have it in Codex? I updated and still nothing.” Another asked: “Is it available on Plus+? free?”
The rollout isn’t instant. Here’s what I learned about how access actually works.
The Direct Answer
GPT-5.5 is rolling out to paid ChatGPT and Codex tiers first. GPT-5.5 Pro (the higher-capability variant) is available to business and pro-tier accounts for harder tasks. API access is “coming soon” according to OpenAI’s announcement—no exact date yet.
If you updated and still don’t see GPT-5.5, you’re likely in a later rollout wave or need to check your subscription tier.
Access by Tier
Here’s what’s available right now:
Tier | GPT-5.5 Access | GPT-5.5 Pro | API Access--------------|----------------|-------------|------------Free | Not available | No | NoPlus | Rolling out | No | NoPro | Available | Yes | NoTeam | Available | Yes | NoEnterprise | Available | Yes | API soonAPI Users | Not yet | Not yet | Coming soonThe key distinction:
- GPT-5.5: The standard model, rolling out to Plus and above
- GPT-5.5 Pro: Higher capability for complex tasks, Pro/Team/Enterprise only
- API: Both models will eventually be available via API, but not yet
How to Check Your Access
In ChatGPT
- Log into ChatGPT
- Click the model selector dropdown (top of chat)
- Look for GPT-5.5 or GPT-5.5 Pro in the list
If you see it, you have access. If not, you’re either on Free tier or in a later rollout wave.
In Codex App
1. Update to latest app version - iOS: App Store > Updates - Android: Play Store > My apps
2. Open Codex and check model selector - Tap model name at top of screen - Look for GPT-5.5 in dropdown
3. If not visible: - Check subscription tier in Settings - Wait for rollout (can take days to weeks)The Codex rollout seems slower than ChatGPT web. Multiple Reddit users reported updating the app but not seeing the new model.
Check Your Subscription Tier
In ChatGPT/Codex settings, verify what tier you’re actually on:
ChatGPT: Settings > SubscriptionCodex: Settings > Account
Look for:- "Plus" - Rolling out access- "Pro" - Should have GPT-5.5 + Pro variant- "Team" - Should have full access- "Enterprise" - Should have full accessSome users assume they’re on Pro when they’re actually on Plus. The tier names can be confusing.
Why Rollout Takes Time
OpenAI doesn’t flip a switch for everyone. Rollouts happen in waves for several reasons:
- Infrastructure capacity - New models need compute resources
- Quality monitoring - They watch for issues before wider release
- User feedback - Early users help identify problems
- Regional differences - Some regions get access later
The announcement said “rolling out to paid tiers” which implies gradual deployment, not instant availability.
What to Do If You Don’t Have Access
Option 1: Wait
The simplest approach. If you’re on a paid tier, you’ll get it eventually. Check daily in the model selector.
Option 2: Verify Your Tier
Make sure you’re actually on a tier that gets access:
Free → Plus: GPT-5.5 rolling outPlus → Pro: GPT-5.5 Pro for harder tasksPro → Team: Same access, team featuresIf you’re on Free, you won’t see GPT-5.5 until OpenAI expands availability.
Option 3: Check App Version
Sometimes the app update itself is delayed:
iOS: Settings > General > iPhone Storage > CodexAndroid: Settings > Apps > Codex
Compare version number with App Store/Play Store listingAn old app version won’t show new model options even if your account has access.
API Timeline
For developers waiting for API access:
Current state: Not availableOpenAI statement: "Coming soon"Expected pricing: Higher than GPT-5.4 (2x price rumored)Monitor: platform.openai.com/docs/modelsThere’s no published date. Based on previous rollouts:
- GPT-4 took weeks to reach general API availability
- GPT-4 Turbo was faster, about 1 week after announcement
- GPT-5.4 was available within days
GPT-5.5 might follow similar patterns, but “coming soon” is the only official guidance.
Common Questions I Saw
”Is GPT-5.5 on Plus?”
Based on the announcement and tier matrix: Yes, but rolling out. If you’re on Plus and don’t see it, you’re in a later wave.
”Is GPT-5.5 Pro worth upgrading?”
GPT-5.5 Pro is designed for harder tasks—complex reasoning, multi-file debugging, scientific analysis. If your use cases are mostly quick coding questions, standard GPT-5.5 is probably sufficient.
”Why does my colleague have it but I don’t?”
Rollout waves aren’t always predictable. Factors that might affect timing:
- Account age
- Usage patterns
- Geographic region
- Random selection for load balancing
There’s no official explanation, and asking support typically yields “wait for rollout” responses.
Quick Reference
Problem | Check | Solution---------------------------|------------------------|---------------------------Updated app, no GPT-5.5 | Subscription tier | Upgrade if on Free | App version | Force update if old | Model selector | May need rollout waitPaid tier, no access | Account tier name | Verify Plus/Pro/Team | Wait time | 1-7 days typical rolloutNeed API access | OpenAI docs | Not yet available | Platform status | Monitor announcementsNeed Pro variant | Tier level | Pro/Team required | Task complexity | Only for hard tasksWhat I’m Doing
I’m on Plus. I check the model selector daily. When GPT-5.5 appears, I’ll test it on my typical workflow. Until then, GPT-5.4 works fine for most tasks.
For API work, I’m not blocking any projects on GPT-5.5. The “coming soon” timeline is too vague to plan around. I’ll switch when it’s available.
