Problem

During the WWDC 2026 keynote, Apple announced that some macOS 27 AI features would require 12GB RAM. News outlets picked this up, and soon the general conclusion was: “your 8GB Mac is cut off from all AI features.”

I wanted to know — is that actually true? Which features, specifically, are gated behind the higher RAM?

The Real List

After digging through beta tester reports and Apple’s documentation, here’s the full picture:

Features that require 12GB RAM (total: 2):

  1. Advanced dictation — higher-accuracy live transcription
  2. Customizable Siri voice — personalized voice generation from your recordings

Features that work on 8GB (everything else):

  • Siri on-device intelligence with Apple Silicon Neural Engine
  • System-wide AI writing tools
  • AI photo enhancement and editing
  • App intelligence and smart suggestions
  • Core Siri functionality
  • All non-AI macOS 27 features

Why These Two Features Need More RAM

I think Apple’s design choices explain the RAM requirement:

Advanced dictation uses a larger, more accurate language model for real-time transcription. Running this model alongside the rest of the OS requires more RAM than the 8GB base configuration provides.

Custom Siri voice works by having you read a set of phrases, then generating a neural voice model from the recordings. This requires loading both the voice synthesis model and the audio processing pipeline in memory simultaneously.

Both are specialized audio features — they’re closer to professional tools like Logic Pro features than to core OS functionality.

Why Apple Segments This Way

This isn’t a new strategy. Apple has always reserved certain pro features for higher-RAM configurations while keeping the core experience identical across the lineup. The same pattern exists with Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro.

The modular approach means:

  • Core AI stack runs on 8GB efficiently
  • Specialized model features need the extra headroom
  • Most users never notice the difference

The takeaway: “AI features” is too broad a category. The 12GB requirement is narrowly scoped to two pro audio features, not the entire Apple Intelligence stack.
